Grenadier, the local developer for the new watersports centre on Exmouth seafront, have today revealed that the centre will be named ‘Sideshore’. The inspiration for the name is firmly seated in watersports with “Sideshore” being a term referring to the winds blowing parallel to the shore – the most desirable direction for kitesurfing. Similarly, the name is also a clear nod to the seafront as Grenadier and key tenants Edge Watersports and Michael Caines look to promote Exmouth as the watersports destination in the UK.

The centre, which is being developed on a not-for-profit basis by Grenadier, will see part of Exmouth waterfront transformed into a brand-new water sports facility for the community. The development which is Phase 2 of the wider plans was given the green light by East Devon District Council in June 2018 with construction scheduled to begin this summer.

Aiden Johnson-Hugill, Director, Grenadier said: “We are really pleased that the works are due to commence soon and the vision for The Sideshore is becoming increasingly real.

Sideshore will soon become the place for the community and visitors to Exmouth to learn to stand up paddleboard, kitesurf, eat, drink or simply sit and watch the amazing activities and sports on offer.

Exmouth is a beautiful town and we want to preserve the environment by creating a centre which fits in seamlessly with the landscape and offers activities for all generations and abilities to enjoy.”

The first tenant announced for the centre, family run Edge Watersports, is already recognised as world-leaders in the area, and between them ‘Team Bridge’ have over 35 World and European titles to their name, and their unparalleled knowledge of the water conditions in Exmouth make them the perfect choice to operate Sideshore.

Local and renowned celebrity chef, Michael Caines added: “I’m very much looking forward to Sideshore opening and being a part of this fantastic new offering on Exmouth seafront. I have received some fantastic support from the local community, who are excited to see a completely new offering from me, and I’m looking forward to sharing more on my own plans for my café and restaurant shortly.”

Award-winning local chef, Michael Caines, is the latest tenant of the water sports centre. Caines’ plans for Sideshore are noticeably very different to the fine dining experience available at nearby Lympstone Manor and include a range of offers to suit all tastes, from a casual dining restaurant complete with an upstairs terrace, to a dog-friendly cafe offering a lighter menu and serving homemade ice-creams, local coffee and healthy takeaway snacks.

Sideshore, with its watersports, café and restaurant facilities are expected to open Summer 2020.
