Exmouth eco event brings together local businesses, residents, and visitors in support of our environment

Sideshore, Exmouth’s Watersports Centre held their first festival at the weekend, with live music, games, stallholders, and a selection of food and drink. Visitors were also encouraged to book the free cinema screening showing Sir David Attenborough’s A Life on Our Planet, and local paddleboarder, Cal Major’s Vitamin Sea, which are both influential environmental films.

During the week a series of educational workshops took place with Exmouth Community College. Hosted by Sideshore and run by Earth Minutes, who specialise in environmental thinking and learning, Years 7, 8, and 9 students were given a crash course on our oceans, the impact of plastic pollution, and inspired to collaborate to produce awareness campaign posters.

Cllr and Exmouth Mayor, Steve Gazzard was joined by Town Crier, Roger Bourgine, to award the students with prizes for the most inspirational posters.

Emma Askew, Founder of Earth Minutes, added:

“We were delighted to work alongside Sideshore to run these action-focused workshops as it gave us the opportunity to explore the students’ connection to their local coastal environment, from the air they breathe to the clothes they wear, which is the critical first step to unlocking their potential as change-makers.”

The community event which aims to bring people together and raise important awareness of environmental issues, was well received by the local community. Music and entertainment were provided by Centre Stage Exmouth, Busker Bradley, and Oxygen House’s very own Lewis Esparon, whilst a wide selection of food and drink was available from Mickey’s Beach, Café Patisserie Glacerie, Hangtime Café, and Two Drifters Rum.

Plans for next years event are already underway “our intention is to make the event a real celebration for the community, with more stalls, artists and activities, all underpinned by our commitment to raising awareness of environmental issues” says Simon Findel-Hawkins, Centre Manager, Sideshore.
