Sideshore, the new not-for-profit seafront development on Exmouth seafront is expected to be completed by Summer 2020. Developer, Grenadier, celebrated their latest milestone with the completion of the watersport centre’s steel structure by holding a topping out ceremony.

Joined by local school children from Brixington Primary Academy, councillors, staff from East Devon District Council, including Deputy Chief Executive Richard Cohen and Exmouth Mayor, Steve Gazzard, the ceremony marked a key milestone in the construction of the centre. The children left their own legacies by signing a brick with their names and laying it on site, so that they too will be part of this sustainable project.

The much anticipated watersports centre will house world-renowned and family-owned Edge Watersports, and local award-winning celebrity chef Michael Caines.

Designed to be highly sustainable and powered by low-carbon technologies, over the coming months the various parts of the project will be brought together. Once completed, a brand-new watersports centre and multi-use facility which celebrates the Exmouth seafront and the surrounding area will be unveiled, establishing a go-to destination for visitors and locals alike.

The centre will be run by Edge Watersports, a team with Olympic prospects and multiple world champion titles between them. The family run business has been instrumental in making Exmouth the go-to kitesurfing destination on the UK. The aim is to give everyone from all walks of life and backgrounds the opportunity to have a go at water sports.

Of course, the centre will also offer the prime spot for anyone to come and witness all the action – even if they don’t want to dip their toes in the water themselves.

Speaking at the ceremony, Grenadier Property Director, Aiden Johnson-Hugill said: “We are delighted that construction is on schedule for Sideshore. This milestone marks the transformation of the seafront as a go-to destination for locals and visitors to Exmouth. It also demonstrates the legacy we are creating for the community.

Instead of erecting a tree at the top of this building, as is the tradition at topping out ceremonies, Grenadier have instead planted five healthy new trees with the Woodland Trust as a nod to the ethos and natural regeneration of this site.”

Richard Cohen, Deputy Chief Executive, East Devon District Council commented: “It’s great to see so many people come and support this project. The centre has been much anticipated and seeing the steelworks in place give you a real sense of scale. Grenadier have kept the pace of the project and we look forward to celebrating the centre opening in as little as eight months.”

Sideshore is due to open to the public Summer 2020.
