Local developer Grenadier has announced a phased opening of the new Exmouth Watersports centre, Sideshore, this Autumn. The phased launch will see local operator Edge Watersports opening first.

Steph Bridge, Edge Watersports, said: “We will be offering many of our services including kitesurfing and stand up paddle boarding lessons and hire at our new location after an anticipated busy summer. The nature of our business means we can safely work outside with people, whether that’s through one-to-one lessons, distanced group lessons, or equipment hire.”

“We’re really excited to open part of our offering this year as promised at Sideshore. Our annual events, the Exe Hammer, and the Edge Race Cup will be taking place as planned this September. Next year we’ll have additional services available to residents and visitors to Exmouth to enjoy.”

It was announced yesterday that Michael Caines’ restaurant will include a glass canopy offering views of the beautiful coastline to diners and visitors to the restaurant and café.

Aiden Johnson-Hugill, Property Director, Grenadier, said: “We are excited to see how far Sideshore has come in recent months, especially during a very unpredictable time. Whilst we would love to fully open the centre as planned in Summer 2020, Edge Watersports will open first, and Michael Caines will open after.”

According to Grenadier, more details on when Michael Caines will open his restaurant and café will be released soon.

Cllr Hayward, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Economy and Assets, added: “The Sideshore development has always been intended to deliver a vibrant and exciting community hub for both Exmouth residents and visitors to this wonderful town.

I am confident that everyone will want to take advantage of the sports and leisure facilities on offer, or grab a bite to eat, or simply just sit on the beach and watch the world go by (and perhaps a paddle-boarder or two) with a tea, coffee, soft drink or ice cream in hand.

EDDC has been behind this project from the outset and therefore I am delighted that a phased opening will be possible, ensuring that first-class amenities are provided to all, whilst at the same time allowing for the safety and well-being of all visitors and users at this challenging time. This is a very positive event for the town.

I look forward to visiting at the earliest opportunity and to see this amazing water sports centre open – in all its glory!”

Sideshore is expected to reach an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of A which is ground-breaking for a commercial building of this type. Every detail has been considered to ensure the building will be as self-sufficient and environmentally friendly as possible.

There is a focus on recycling facilities and “green leases” to ensure all tenants adhere to a ban on single use plastics. Committed to an environmentally conscious approach to development, Grenadier wants to push the boundaries of sustainability in order to deliver a project which not only benefits the community but also the wider environment.
